While swaggering¹ over wagon trails
I saw some funny things:
A signpost² promoting pretentions³
A blindfolded⁴ dove without wings.

While wallowing through Iowa⁵
I noted some curious sounds:
An unbaptized⁶ flute⁷ playing “Sideways⁸”
An eccentric toupee’s⁹ new bloodhounds.

I’ve sold my soul and my signature¹⁰,
I’ve studied idioms¹¹ for idiots.
I’ve sung carols¹² about construction¹³,
And suffered some rather probing tests.

While ambling through America
I’ve experienced lots, you see.
But nothing’s quite stuck¹⁴ as much
As that black-toothed¹⁵ gambler’s¹⁶ tee-
